The Punjab Assembly established Punjabi University, Patiala through the Punjab Act No. 35 of 1961. On June 24, 1962, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the President of India at the time, laid the foundation of this esteemed institution. He emphasized the role of higher education in nation-building, aiming for a strong, democratic India where every citizen has equal opportunities for growth. The university was founded on April 30, 1962, in the princely state of Patiala, with a primary objective of promoting Punjabi language, arts, and literature. Over time, it has grown into the largest university in the state and holds the distinction of being the second university in the world named after a language, following Israel’s Hebrew University.
