The ‘Hindoo College’, established in 1817, underwent a significant transformation in 1855, evolving into the renowned ‘Presidency College of Bengal’. Serving as the earliest institution of higher learning in the modern context across Asia, Hindoo College pioneered western education. Initially, it was a non-governmental college primarily catering to the male progeny of the Hindu community. However, the Centenary Volume (1955) highlights a noteworthy aspect: ‘The most striking feature of the Hindu College was its determined effort to impart secular education.’ This dedication to secular education was a key element. Subsequently, in 1855, with the renaming to Presidency College, it transitioned into a government-affiliated institution.
